A court in Baku dismissed a criminal case against a man who admitted beating his wife after discovering that she had bought a new phone without telling him.
The incident took place in the Bulbula settlement of Baku’s Surakhani district.
According to the indictment, the 39-year-old man, identified by the fictitious name Farid Najafov, repeatedly struck his wife with his hands and feet during an argument at their home.
The woman, identified as Nigar, had purchased the phone for a small perfume-selling business she had started without informing her husband.
Najafov told investigators that he saw the unfamiliar phone in his wife’s hands while he was home from work and demanded to know who it belonged to.
After she explained that she had secretly started selling perfume and bought the device for work, an argument broke out.
“I lost control of myself and struck Nigar several times with my hands and feet on different parts of her body,” he said in his testimony.
The woman then went into the living room crying, while her husband remained in the bedroom to “calm down,” according to his account.
The couple later decided to separate. Nigar returned to her parents’ home, while Najafov went to stay with his family in Mingachevir.
During a later phone conversation, the woman reportedly said she would file a police complaint unless he apologized for the beating. Najafov refused and argued with her again.
He also admitted that he had slapped his wife 20 times after finding messages she had exchanged with a female friend whom he disapproved of – one slap for each message.
Najafov later said he regretted his actions.
Police detained him and opened a criminal case following the woman’s complaint. However, the victim later told the court that she had no claims or demands against her husband.
The court subsequently dismissed the case and released Najafov from criminal liability.
