The peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia is not limited to declarations on paper, and Baku has demonstrated its intentions through concrete actions, according to Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the president of Azerbaijan and head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration.
As AZE.US reports, Hajiyev made the remarks during a conversation with a correspondent from the Turkish newspaper Milliyet.
Despite what he described as genocide committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan, Hajiyev said Baku had demonstrated that its sole intention was to establish peace.
“Peace currently prevails in the South Caucasus,” he said. “If the Armenia-Azerbaijan war had continued, the sparks from conflicts taking place in neighboring countries could have spread to our region as well.”
Hajiyev also welcomed the Armenian government’s adoption of the “Real Armenia” concept as a central political approach.
He said Yerevan had accepted the new geopolitical realities and was beginning to shape its policies accordingly.
“They have recognized the realities and understood that the policy of occupation effectively held Armenia itself captive for many years and that it was the wrong path,” Hajiyev said. “Armenia now recognizes how important relations with Azerbaijan and Türkiye are for its own development.”
The presidential aide also addressed the proposed opening of the Zangezur Corridor, describing the project as an integral part of the new geopolitical reality.
According to Hajiyev, the route would serve the interests of Armenia as well as Azerbaijan by expanding regional transport and trade opportunities.
“Armenia also understands that having access to regional transit opportunities is important for its own development,” he said.
