Food remains the largest everyday expense for people in Azerbaijan, accounting for more than half of consumer spending, according to the latest figures released by the State Statistical Committee.
The data show that the population’s spending was distributed across several major categories:
- 50.3% on food products;
- 14.3% on clothing and footwear;
- 5.7% on transportation;
- 2.5% on medicines and medical supplies.
A survey of residents in Baku and other parts of Azerbaijan also identified rent, utility bills, transportation and school-related purchases among the heaviest burdens on household budgets.
One respondent estimated that their family spends approximately 700 manats ($412) a month on food. Others said rent consumes the largest share of their income, followed by groceries and transportation.
Medical costs represent another significant burden. Some respondents reported spending between 200 and 300 manats ($118-$176) on medicines each month.
Car owners also pointed to rising fuel and maintenance expenses. Other recurring costs mentioned in the survey included mobile phone service, clothing, schoolbooks, backpacks and traditional contributions toward weddings and other family events.
The official percentages reflect spending across selected consumer categories. The financial situation of individual households can differ substantially depending on rent, family size, medical needs and car ownership.
