Sabina Aliyeva has been reelected as Azerbaijan’s commissioner for human rights, or ombudsman, following a vote in the Milli Majlis.

The decision was taken at a parliamentary vote, according to Report.

President Ilham Aliyev had submitted three candidates for lawmakers’ consideration: Sabina Yashar gizi Aliyeva, Jeyhun Yasinali oglu Garajayev and Elshana Rafig gizi Veliyeva.

Under Azerbaijan’s law on the human rights commissioner, the ombudsman is elected for a seven-year term. Thirty days before the incumbent’s term expires, the president must submit three candidates to parliament, and the Milli Majlis must elect an ombudsman within 15 days. The same person may serve no more than two terms.

Speaking at the Milli Majlis plenary session, Aliyeva said her near-term priorities would include stronger oversight of the implementation of ombudsman recommendations and improvements to the legal framework.

She said key tasks would also include protecting vulnerable groups, developing preventive monitoring mechanisms, making the ombudsman’s office more accessible in the regions and introducing legal standards suited to digitalization and the development of artificial intelligence.

Aliyeva also pledged to modernize public legal education in response to current challenges, encourage public participation and strengthen ties with civil society institutions.

Internationally, she said the office would continue informing global audiences about Azerbaijan’s human rights record and the humanitarian consequences of the war and postwar periods, which she said would be presented on the basis of objective facts.
