The Azerbaijani Peace Bridge Initiative Group has expressed deep disappointment over what it described as hostile coverage and an unacceptable tone in Armenia following a visit by foreign diplomats to Azerbaijan’s Karabakh and East Zangezur regions.
The diplomatic corps traveled to the two regions on September 11-12. The group’s statement was posted on Telegram by Azerbaijani political analyst Farhad Mammadov.
The initiative said visits by foreign diplomats to Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory should not become a source of political controversy. It argued that verbal attacks against ambassadors and the countries they represent contradict Armenia’s recognition of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Azerbaijan and Armenia are now in a post-conflict period, with both countries facing the difficult task of overcoming decades of confrontation,” the statement said.
The group noted that civil society representatives, with support from the Azerbaijani and Armenian governments, have been taking steps to promote dialogue, strengthen mutual confidence and contribute to the peace process.
The statement also addressed disputes surrounding cultural heritage. According to the group, cultural sites located within Azerbaijan are protected by the Azerbaijani state, while disagreements over heritage should be discussed through open dialogue and on the basis of reciprocity.
It said civil society representatives had established a platform for professional discussions on sensitive issues that form part of the broader peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The initiative warned that the normalization process must not be allowed to come under pressure from revanchist forces, saying such interference could jeopardize further progress toward peace.
“We call on Armenian society to demonstrate a responsible approach and not succumb to provocations by those pursuing malicious goals both inside and outside Armenia,” the statement said.
The document was signed by Farhad Mammadov, Kamala Mammadova, Rusif Huseynov, Dilara Efendiyeva and Ramil Iskanderli.
