Residents in several districts of Baku have recently reported a sharp increase in flying ants, with videos shared on social media showing large numbers of insects gathering around lights and entering homes through windows and mosquito nets.

Some residents said they had not seen such a large number of winged ants for many years. The insects are mostly seen in the evening, causing concern in apartment buildings, private houses and courtyards. Some people also reported skin irritation or allergic reactions after contact with the insects.

Ecologist Anvar Aliyev said the insects are ordinary winged ants and that their sudden appearance is linked to recent changes in weather conditions.

According to him, flying ants often appear after a period of rain followed by a sharp rise in temperature. When the upper layer of soil warms up to a certain level, the insects begin to emerge in large numbers.

Aliyev noted that this process is more common in rural areas, but under suitable weather conditions it can also be seen in cities. Because the insects are very light, even moderate wind can carry them from one area to another.

The ecologist said the flying ants do not pose a serious danger and should not cause panic. However, he advised residents to keep homes, yards and surrounding areas clean, use mosquito nets where possible, and avoid leaving bright lights on near open windows in the evening.
