Azerbaijan’s donkey population fell to 10,300 at the beginning of 2026, continuing a decline that has reduced the total by more than 70% over the past decade.

The country recorded 12,700 donkeys in 2025, meaning the population decreased by 2,400, or nearly 19%, in one year, according to official statistics reported by Modern.az.

The figures show a sustained downward trend:

  • 2016: 35,800
  • 2021: 23,400
  • 2023: 20,000
  • 2024: 14,900
  • 2025: 12,700
  • Early 2026: 10,300

Azerbaijan has lost 25,500 donkeys since 2016, representing a decline of approximately 71%. The total has fallen by almost half since 2023 alone.

The country’s horse population also decreased. Azerbaijan had 46,400 horses at the beginning of 2026, down from 49,400 a year earlier. That represents an annual decline of 3,000, or about 6%.

The camel population remained unchanged at approximately 400, the same level recorded in 2025.

The published statistics did not explain the reasons for the continuing decline in Azerbaijan’s donkey and horse populations.
