A new travel option is being discussed in Azerbaijan for people who want to visit Georgia and still use their own car during the trip.

Under the arrangement, the passenger travels to Georgia by train, while the vehicle is transported separately to the country, either before or after the passenger’s arrival.

The option has come up as Azerbaijan’s land borders remain closed to regular passenger crossings. For those planning longer trips to Georgia, especially families, it may offer a way to avoid relying on taxis or rental cars.

Logistics specialist Hafiz Amiraslanov said demand for this service has increased in recent days.

According to him, sending a car to Georgia usually requires an international cargo document, an invoice and permission for the vehicle to leave Azerbaijan.

The paperwork can be handled either by the customer or through the carrier. Aslanov said the documentation fee is 150 manats (about $88) for a one-way shipment.

That means a citizen can travel by train to Tbilisi or another destination in Georgia, while the vehicle is delivered separately by transport service.

The option may be more attractive for families or travelers planning to stay in Georgia for several days and visit multiple cities or regions. In those cases, having a personal car may be cheaper and more convenient than using taxis or renting a vehicle.

The return trip, however, costs more.

Aslanov said transporting a vehicle back from Georgia to Azerbaijan costs around $250-300. The higher price is linked to strong demand on the return route, as many foreign cars are also brought into Azerbaijan through Georgia.

In addition, once the vehicle returns to Azerbaijan, it must enter a customs terminal in Baku. A terminal fee of 100 manats (about $59) is also charged.

Specialists advise travelers to check all paperwork and costs in advance. This is especially important if the car is registered in another person’s name, is under a loan agreement or is being driven under a power of attorney.

In such cases, document requirements should be clarified before the trip to avoid problems during transport or customs clearance.
