The United Nations plans to expand its work in Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region and has proposed closer cooperation with Karabakh University, the organization’s resident coordinator in the country said Thursday.
Dmytro Shlapachenko made the comments after a high-level strategic dialogue in Khankendi on October 23.
He said employees of various U.N. agencies could begin giving lectures at Karabakh University in January 2027. Shlapachenko stressed that the initiative remains a U.N. proposal for future cooperation and is not yet an operating program.
The dialogue focused on localizing the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals in the Karabakh economic region. Participants discussed safe and sustainable resettlement, economic recovery, human capital development, environmental resilience and infrastructure reconstruction.
Officials also reviewed work in the Jabrayil, Gubadli and Zangilan districts of East Zangezur. Representatives of the United Nations, Azerbaijani government bodies and international organizations took part in the discussions.
