Russian Railways is studying an overland route for fruit and vegetable shipments from Azerbaijan and Türkiye to Russia through Georgia, a senior company executive said Friday.
Vadim Mikhailov, first deputy director general of Russian Railways, outlined the plan at the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum in Istanbul.
The proposed service is still under consideration. Russian Railways has not announced a launch date, expected cargo volumes or operating terms. Mikhailov said the route is being evaluated for use by Russian retail chains.
He linked the proposal to development of the International North-South Transport Corridor, a network stretching more than 7,000 kilometers from St. Petersburg to ports in Iran and India.
Mikhailov said freight traffic on Trans-Caspian routes rose 19% in 2026, while volumes on western routes through Azerbaijan and Iran increased 24%.
The route through Georgia could broaden logistics options for perishable goods from Azerbaijan and Türkiye, but no final decision has been announced.
