BAKU, Azerbaijan - President Ilham Aliyev and UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais discussed state support for Azerbaijan’s tourism industry and plans to develop modern visitor infrastructure outside the capital, officials said Monday.
The talks took place in Baku on Oct. 26 and focused on existing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United Nations tourism agency as well as opportunities to expand the relationship.
The two sides highlighted the development of tourism infrastructure in Azerbaijan’s regions beyond Baku. They said government support, combined with peace and security in the country, was important for the industry’s growth and for attracting international visitors.
Al Nuwais thanked Aliyev for receiving her. The meeting also included an exchange of views on future areas of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UN Tourism.
No specific projects, budgets or implementation timetables were announced after the talks.
The meeting was the latest in a series of engagements between Baku and international organizations as Azerbaijan seeks to broaden economic activity and visitor destinations beyond the capital.
