ChatGPT Does the Homework: Azerbaijan’s Parents and Teachers Raise Concerns

Completed homework does not necessarily mean a student understands the lesson. Parents interviewed in an Azerbaijani television report voiced concern that children are copying answers from ChatGPT instead of working through assignments themselves.

The report brought together parents, university students and education specialists to discuss the line between using artificial intelligence as a learning aid and allowing it to replace learning.

Some parents interviewed favored banning children from using such services. They argued that instant answers can discourage students from trying to solve problems, consulting textbooks or asking teachers for help.

University students took a more measured view. They described using AI to generate ideas and test their knowledge, including asking a chatbot to quiz them on a topic. Copying an entire assignment, however, offered little educational value, they said.

One participant said she had noticed difficulty expressing her own ideas after using AI frequently, prompting her to change how she used the service.

Education specialist Elmin Nuri said AI should support students while leaving the main intellectual work to them. The same principle applies to teachers, he said: technology can ease preparation, but should not do the teacher’s entire job.

Education specialist Vafa Valiyeva warned that routinely copying answers could weaken independent learning and critical thinking. Inaccurate responses pose another risk: students may accept a chatbot’s mistake as an established fact.

She recommended using AI to summarize and condense material already selected, while parents and teachers check whether children understand their assignments and can explain solutions in their own words.

Valiyeva also urged teachers to consider the difficulty of homework. Overly demanding assignments can encourage students to seek ready-made answers, she said, making support with learning as important as supervision.
