Armenia Could Apply for EU Membership in 2027, Pashinyan Says

Armenia could formally apply to join the European Union in 2027, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Tuesday, adding that 2028 also remained a realistic possibility.

Pashinyan made the remarks at the Euronews EU Enlargement Summit in Brussels.

He said recent signals from Brussels indicated political will for further EU enlargement and that Yerevan was also determined to move in that direction.

The Armenian prime minister described filing an application in 2027 as realistic but said 2028 was also possible. His comments referred to a potential start of the formal application process, not a final decision or an agreed accession timetable.

Visa-Free Travel Target

Pashinyan said Armenia was currently focused on its visa-liberalization dialogue with the EU and aimed to secure visa-free travel by 2029.

Armenia has not yet filed a formal EU membership application and remains a member of the Eurasian Economic Union.

Pashinyan has previously acknowledged that full membership in both the EU and the Eurasian bloc would not be possible. He has said Armenia’s ultimate choice should be decided with public support.
