Armenia Could End Up Declaring War on Azerbaijan, Aysin Says

Any political force in Armenia that calls for additional territory is, in effect, calling for a new war with Azerbaijan, political analyst and columnist Ruslan Aysin said in an interview on the YouTube channel Daily Europe Online.

Aysin was commenting on remarks by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who said any party seeking “additional kilometers” for Armenia is effectively promoting war.

Aysin said it was difficult to disagree with that assessment, arguing that territorial expansion would necessarily mean taking land from another state. In this case, he said, that would mean Azerbaijan.

“That is a declaration of war on Azerbaijan and a return to military positioning,” Aysin said, adding that such a scenario is unacceptable for Pashinyan.

According to Aysin, the Armenian prime minister is trying to isolate what he described as a broader “party of war” — political forces that continue to promote revanchism and push for another confrontation with Baku.

He argued that Armenia does not have the resources for a new war and said the domestic political balance in the country also points in another direction.

Aysin said there is no broad public consensus in Armenia in favor of renewed fighting. In his view, if such a consensus existed, Pashinyan would not have remained dominant in the country’s political landscape.

He said most of Armenian society appears to want stability, a return to normal life, and a more peaceful relationship with Azerbaijan rather than another round of conflict.
