Prices for shrimp and crayfish have declined across markets in Azerbaijan as seasonal supplies increase.
Shrimp prices have fallen by 2 to 5 manats ($1.20 to $2.95), while crayfish have become 6 to 10 manats ($3.50 to $5.90) cheaper, according to local vendors.
A kilogram of sea shrimp currently sells for around 25 manats ($14.70), while king prawns cost approximately 35 manats ($20.60). Ocean shrimp are priced at about 30 manats ($17.65) per kilogram.
Some varieties of river shrimp are available for around 18 manats ($10.60) per kilogram.
Vendors said the decline was driven by the start of the season and an increase in the amount of seafood reaching the market.
“River and sea shrimp are now in season, so prices are falling. They become harder to find in winter, and prices rise,” one vendor said.
River shrimp are reportedly attracting the strongest demand, although prices vary depending on the species, size and origin of the product.
The sharpest decline has been recorded for crayfish. Prices now start at 5 manats ($2.95) and increase depending on size.
Market participants expect prices to remain relatively low as long as seasonal supplies remain abundant.
