A recent shopping trip to a Bravo supermarket in Sumgayit offers a snapshot of what Azerbaijani consumers are paying for vegetables, meat, dairy products, fish and household goods.
The authors of YouTube channel Solnechny Kray spent 127 manats, or about $75, on a basket that included fresh produce, cheese, grains, meat, fish, sausages, tea, ice cream and several nonfood items.
Seasonal vegetables remained among the cheapest products. Eggplants were priced at 0.59 manat ($0.35) per kilogram, while watermelons cost 0.79 manat ($0.46) per kilogram. Melons and zucchini were both selling for 0.99 manat ($0.58) per kilogram.
Pink tomatoes cost about 1.89 manats ($1.11) per kilogram. White eggs were priced at 0.17 manat ($0.10) each, while brown eggs cost 0.19 manat ($0.11).
Cheese prices varied widely. Feta was listed at 8.45 manats ($4.97) per kilogram, Gouda at about 16.50 manats ($9.71), and mozzarella at 19.19 manats ($11.29). A package of creamy shor, a traditional Azerbaijani dairy product, was available for 5.99 manats ($3.52).
Bread prices ranged from 2.70 to 3.45 manats ($1.59 to $2.03), depending on the type and weight.
Among grains, red lentils cost about 1.69 manats ($0.99) per kilogram. Semolina was priced at 1.39 manats ($0.82), while a 900-gram package of pearl barley cost 2.99 manats ($1.76). A 910-gram bag of basmati rice was selling for 4.93 manats ($2.90).
Meat was considerably more expensive. Lamb cuts ranged from about 14.99 to 21.39 manats ($8.82 to $12.58) per kilogram. Boneless lamb was priced at approximately 18.99 manats ($11.17), while bone-in meat cost around 15.49 manats ($9.11).
A 500-gram package of lightly salted herring cost between 8.79 and 9.99 manats ($5.17 to $5.88). Mackerel was priced at about 14.90 manats ($8.76) per kilogram, while tilapia cost 11.90 manats ($7.00).
A 924-gram package of frozen Caspian sprat was one of the cheaper fish options at 3.33 manats ($1.96).
Other prices included 2.70 to 2.91 manats ($1.59 to $1.71) for packaged green tea, 5.45 manats ($3.21) for a 400-milliliter bottle of shampoo, 1.40 manats ($0.82) for mineral water in a glass bottle and 1 manat ($0.59) for a serving of ice cream.
The video provides only a snapshot from one Bravo location, but it shows the sharp contrast between relatively affordable seasonal produce and the much higher cost of meat, cheese and processed fish products.
