A massive unfinished building resembling a Roman amphitheater has stood abandoned in Baku for years, with no clear information about its owner, original purpose or future.
The structure is located on Mikayil Mushfig Street, near the Badamdar area of the Azerbaijani capital. Construction began years ago as an apparently ambitious project but was halted before the building could be completed.
Since then, new apartment buildings, parks and roads have appeared around the site. While the surrounding neighborhood has continued to develop, the unfinished structure has remained largely unchanged.
Inside are a large stage, circular rows of seating and a massive dome. The layout suggests that the building was intended to host concerts, performances or other major public events. The venue, however, never welcomed an audience.
Its unusual design has led some residents and local journalists to describe it as Baku’s own “Colosseum.” Today, the site consists largely of exposed concrete, empty window openings and walls covered with graffiti.
It remains unclear who currently owns the property, why construction was suspended and whether there are plans to complete, redevelop or demolish it. No official information has been released about the project’s initial cost or intended opening date.
Journalists contacted the Yasamal District Executive Authority seeking answers about the building’s status and future. Despite several attempts to reach officials, the agency had not responded by the time the report was prepared.
The abandoned venue therefore remains one of Baku’s most visible unanswered urban-development questions: whether the “Colosseum” will ever be completed or eventually disappear as another failed construction project.
