Seafood is more widely available and generally cheaper in Azerbaijan during the summer, but specialists warn that improper storage in hot weather can quickly turn fish, shrimp or squid into a serious health risk.

Shrimp prices currently range from AZN 5 to AZN 45 (about $2.94 to $26.47), depending on their type and size. Crayfish are offered for approximately AZN 15–25 ($8.82–$14.71).

Imported lobsters cost between AZN 35 and AZN 65 ($20.59–$38.24) each, while squid prices range from AZN 15 to AZN 35 ($8.82–$20.59).

A significant share of the fish and seafood sold in Azerbaijan is imported from Norway, Turkey and Iran.

Food safety specialist Ilkin Shirinov said seafood belongs to a high-risk category and should only be purchased from official and trusted retailers that maintain proper refrigeration and freezing conditions.

Consumers should avoid products showing changes in smell, color, texture or overall appearance. Raw or insufficiently cooked seafood may also cause food poisoning.

The risks increase during trips to beaches and other outdoor locations. Seafood can spoil rapidly when transported or left in the heat without adequate cooling.

Children, older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions are considered particularly vulnerable to complications from food poisoning.

Shirinov also warned that seafood harvested from polluted waters may contain toxic substances. Consumers are therefore advised not to buy or eat products of unknown origin, even when they are offered at unusually attractive prices.
