Vehicle owners in Azerbaijan may revoke a power of attorney authorizing another person to drive or dispose of their car at any time, regardless of how long the document was issued for.
Transport expert Razil Naghiyev said the right is established under Article 365.2 of Azerbaijan’s Civil Code.
Under the provision, a person who grants a power of attorney may cancel it or any delegated authority without providing a reason. The person receiving the authority may also relinquish it at any time.
This means an owner does not have to wait for the document to expire, even if it was issued for several years.
The rule is particularly important for people who effectively purchase vehicles through a power-of-attorney arrangement without transferring the registration into their own names.
A power of attorney is not a sales contract and does not transfer legal ownership. The person listed in the vehicle registration documents remains the owner and can subsequently revoke the buyer’s authority.

Once the authorization is revoked, a person who paid for the vehicle but never formally registered it may lose the legal right to drive or dispose of it.
Experts therefore recommend completing a formal purchase agreement and immediately registering the vehicle in the buyer’s name.
Article 366.1 of the Civil Code requires the owner to notify the authorized person and any known third parties before whom that person was expected to represent the owner.
To revoke the document, the owner must present identification at a notary’s office or a notarial service operating inside an ASAN Xidmət center.
Once the cancellation is notarized, the power of attorney loses its legal force and the person named in it may no longer exercise the granted authority.
