Complaints about misleading discount campaigns are increasing in Azerbaijan, with consumers reporting that some retailers raise prices before offering goods at their original cost under the guise of a sale.

Shoppers say bright red labels, large percentage signs and promotional banners do not always translate into genuine savings.

“If a product originally costs 5 manats ($2.94), the store may raise the price to 10 manats ($5.88) and then sell it again for 5 manats while advertising a 50% discount,” one shopper said.

Marketing specialist Beylar Alizade advised consumers not to rely solely on the discount percentage displayed on a price tag. He said buyers should compare prices across stores and, whenever possible, check how much the product cost before the promotion began.

According to Alizade, legitimate discounts are often used to promote products or clear warehouse inventory. However, some retailers artificially increase prices before announcing a sale, creating the illusion of a bargain.

He warned that such practices can damage a company’s reputation, particularly as consumers can now easily compare prices online.

Eyub Huseynov, chairman of the Free Consumers Union of Azerbaijan, said the organization receives numerous complaints alleging that customers were misled or had their rights violated during discount campaigns.

Consumer advocates are urging shoppers not to rush into purchases, to verify previous prices and to report suspicious pricing practices to the relevant authorities.

Experts say a genuine discount should be reflected not only on the price tag, but also in the final amount paid at the checkout.
