The leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and the United States held a series of phone calls on August 8 marking the first anniversary of the Washington peace summit, with talks focused on the normalization process between Baku and Yerevan, expanding economic ties and implementation of the TRIPP transport project.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed progress made since the August 8, 2025 Washington summit, which was held with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The two leaders noted advances in the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the past year and highlighted the role played by Trump and the U.S. government in supporting the peace process.
They also pointed to growing economic cooperation as one of the tangible results of normalization.
The discussion included exports of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia, as well as the transit of cargo through Azerbaijan to Armenia and from Armenia to other destinations.
Aliyev and Pashinyan also exchanged views on implementation of the TRIPP route under the agreements reached in Washington.
Later the same day, Pashinyan spoke by phone with Trump.
The Armenian prime minister thanked the U.S. president for his support for the peace process and for hosting the 2025 Washington summit. According to the Armenian side, the two leaders said the Washington agreements had resulted in what they described as tangible peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Pashinyan and Trump also discussed the current status of TRIPP and confirmed their intention to begin infrastructure construction under the project in the near future.
Aliyev and Trump also held a separate phone conversation on August 8.
The two presidents reviewed developments since the Washington summit and stressed that peace and stability had been maintained in the region over the past year without incidents capable of undermining the normalization process.
Aliyev thanked Trump for hosting the summit and for his contribution to the peace agenda, while Trump praised the Azerbaijani president’s role in advancing the process.
The leaders also discussed the beginning of trade ties between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including Azerbaijani petroleum exports and transit shipments through Azerbaijani territory.
TRIPP was again a central topic.
The Azerbaijani side said transport infrastructure work on its territory was nearing completion, while the leaders expressed hope that construction related to the project would soon begin in Armenia.
Aliyev and Trump also discussed bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the United States.
The two sides described the signing of a strategic partnership document as a historic development and said relations between Baku and Washington had entered a qualitatively new stage.
Aliyev also thanked Trump for inviting Azerbaijan to the G20.
The three phone calls underscored a shift in the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process from political agreements toward practical cooperation, with trade, transit and new regional transport links increasingly becoming part of the post-conflict agenda.
