71% of Visitors Are Men: Who Is Actually Traveling to Azerbaijan?

AZE.US

In January 2026, Azerbaijan received 181,800 foreign citizens and stateless persons from 158 countries, according to data released by the State Statistics Committee. Of those arrivals, 71.1% were men and 28.9% were women – a notable gender imbalance in the country’s inbound flow.

The figures suggest that Azerbaijan’s visitor profile may differ from that of traditional leisure destinations, where gender ratios tend to be more balanced.

By country of origin, the largest share of arrivals came from Russia (23.4%) and Turkey (20.1%). Other significant sources included Iran (8.5%), India (5.0%), Saudi Arabia (4.9%), Georgia (4.8%), Pakistan (3.7%), Kazakhstan (3.1%), Uzbekistan (2.8%), Israel (2.7%), Kuwait (2.0%), the United Arab Emirates (1.7%), China (1.4%), as well as Turkmenistan and Ukraine (1.3% each).

A substantial portion of the inbound flow thus originates from the Middle East, South Asia and neighboring regional markets – areas where outbound travel patterns often skew male.

Air travel accounted for 72.4% of arrivals, while 26.3% entered via rail or road and 1.3% by sea.

The official statistics do not break down arrivals by purpose of visit. Analysts note that inbound figures include not only leisure tourism but also business travel, short-term commercial activity, transit movements and other forms of cross-border mobility.

While the overall number of visitors increased by 5.3% year-on-year, the gender distribution and geographic composition offer additional context to Azerbaijan’s evolving inbound profile.
