Artificial intelligence could accelerate medical research and help doctors develop new treatments, but it is unlikely to produce a single cure for all forms of cancer, Azerbaijani professor Adil Geybulla said.
His comments followed a statement by Arm Holdings CEO Rene Haas, who predicted that AI would transform medicine and could contribute to the development of new cancer treatments.
Geybulla, a doctor of medical sciences, said cancer should not be viewed as a single disease that can be treated with one universal drug.
“Cancer is the uncontrolled division of cells that have escaped the body’s genetic regulatory mechanisms,” he said. “There are numerous forms of cancer, each with different causes, biological characteristics and responses to treatment.”
According to the professor, cancer rates are influenced by several factors, including population growth, longer life expectancy, environmental deterioration, radiation, harmful chemicals and certain infections. The causes and risk factors vary depending on the type of tumor.
Geybulla also noted that cancer cells can change as the disease progresses, making tumors increasingly complex and sometimes resistant to treatment.
He cited pancreatic cancer as one of the diseases with a particularly poor prognosis. Breast cancer, meanwhile, is divided into several molecular subtypes, each requiring a different treatment strategy.
The professor said AI would remain an important tool for doctors and researchers. It can analyze large volumes of medical data, identify patterns, assist in discovering promising drug candidates and help physicians select personalized treatments.
However, he stressed that final medical decisions must remain with qualified specialists.
“Expecting artificial intelligence to independently discover a universal cure for cancer is unrealistic,” Geybulla said.
“But it can accelerate research and help develop more accurate methods of diagnosis and treatment.”
