An unidentified projectile struck a tanker entering the Strait of Hormuz, lightly wounding two crew members, maritime authorities said.
The vessel remained under way and continued toward its next port, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, or UKMTO. The attacker has not been identified, and no leak or environmental damage was reported.
Reuters tracking data showed 17 cargo vessels crossed the strait on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20, compared with 37 a week earlier. Some tankers have also switched off their transponders.
Traffic Through Strategic Waterway Falls
Before the current war, about 125 large commercial ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz each day. In peacetime, roughly 20 million barrels of oil move through the waterway daily, equivalent to about one-fifth of global consumption.
Hossein Mohebbi, a representative of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Tehran believed the war was not over and warned that Iran could change its weapons, tactics and the geography of its targets if the United States escalated again. His comments were not directly linked to the tanker incident.
