Azerbaijani TV serials are contributing to family conflict, domestic tension and rising divorce risks by normalizing aggression and toxic relationships on screen, sociologist and philosophy doctor Mayil Yagub said in an interview aired by TV Musavat.

Yagub argued that local TV dramas rarely show healthy or stable family life, instead revolving around shouting, humiliation, constant quarrels and emotionally destructive behavior.

According to him, repeated exposure to that kind of content gradually shapes how viewers, including children and teenagers, perceive normal relationships inside the home.

He said the problem goes beyond television and is reinforced by social media, where aggressive and degrading content can also affect young people’s behavior and emotional development. In his view, society should not dismiss the psychological effect of what people see every day, especially when conflict and hostility are presented as routine.

The sociologist said such media content can influence family disputes, increase aggression and indirectly contribute to divorces. He also argued that many viewers absorb these patterns subconsciously, even when they believe they are not being affected.

At the same time, Yagub placed the main responsibility on parents, saying the family remains the primary environment shaping a child’s behavior. Harsh language, humiliation and constant tension at home, he said, can be just as damaging as toxic content coming from outside.

He called for a broader public discussion about family values, children’s psychological well-being and the role media plays in setting behavioral norms in Azerbaijani society.
