Five Azerbaijani citizens were killed and three others were injured after drone strikes hit two foreign cargo vessels in the Azov Sea, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry said 25 Azerbaijani citizens were among the crews of the vessels. The ships were not owned by the Azerbaijani state.
According to the ministry, Azerbaijan received information on the incident from the Russian side.
“As a result of the attack, 5 of our citizens were killed and 3 were injured,” the ministry said. “The injured were taken to a hospital in the city of Yeysk.”
The Foreign Ministry said it is coordinating with relevant state agencies, Azerbaijan’s diplomatic missions and authorities of the countries involved.
Several employees of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Russia have been sent to the scene, the ministry said.
The ministry said the condition of Azerbaijani citizens, their possible return to Azerbaijan and the provision of consular assistance remain under close attention.
The Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to the families and relatives of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
The independent sources inform that drones were operated by the Ukrainian army forces.
