Azerbaijan’s used air conditioner market is heating up ahead of summer, with prices rising as demand picks up and buyers weigh whether second-hand units still offer real savings over new models.

Technicians and sellers say prices now depend heavily on the unit’s power, brand, age, technical condition and the size of the room it is designed to cool.

Across the market, used air conditioners can start from about 180 to 300 manats ($106 to $176), but stronger models cost much more. Units designed for rooms of around 30 to 40 square meters, which were offered last year for roughly 450 to 550 manats ($265 to $324), are now being sold for about 500 to 600 manats ($294 to $353), depending on the brand.

The price gap with new units is not always large. Some technicians say demand for used air conditioners remains limited because cheaper new models are available, and the difference between a new and second-hand unit can be only 100 to 200 manats ($59 to $118). Many buyers prefer to pay extra for a new unit rather than risk repairs.

By capacity, used 9,000 BTU units are selling for about 200 to 500 manats ($118 to $294), while 12,000 BTU models range from 300 to 600 manats ($176 to $353). More powerful 24,000 BTU units can cost 600 to 1,200 manats ($353 to $706).

New air conditioners vary even more widely. Smaller units start from around 400 manats ($235), while models for spaces of about 60 square meters can cost 1,000 to 1,500 manats ($588 to $882). Larger 24,000 BTU units are being sold for about 1,200 to 2,000 manats ($706 to $1,176).

In Tovuz, used air conditioner prices reportedly start from 180 to 200 manats ($106 to $118). In Sheki, technicians say a used unit for a room of about 30 square meters may cost 250 to 350 manats ($147 to $206), compared with roughly 450 to 500 manats ($265 to $294) for a new model of the same class.

For larger rooms and commercial spaces, prices are higher. New powerful units may cost 950 to 1,400 manats ($559 to $824), while used models are typically offered for 450 to 600 manats ($265 to $353). In warmer districts, including Barda, demand is traditionally stronger during the summer season.

Technicians advise buyers not to focus only on the price. Before purchasing a used air conditioner, they say buyers should check the compressor noise, radiator condition and possible signs of freon or oil leakage. Those details often show whether the unit is still reliable or may soon need repairs.

Installation and maintenance also add to the final cost. Cleaning and installing a unit can cost up to 50 manats ($29), while seasonal maintenance services usually range from 30 to 100 manats ($18 to $59).

For many households, the used market can still offer savings. But as prices rise and some second-hand units move close to the cost of new models, the real question is no longer just how cheap the unit is. It is whether the buyer is also ready for the extra costs that may come after the first hot week.
