Artificial intelligence is already changing Azerbaijan’s labor market. As automation expands, traditional professions are being transformed, while digital skills, data literacy and the ability to work with new technologies are becoming increasingly important for job seekers.
Experts say the shift is less about entire professions disappearing and more about job requirements changing. Workers will need to continuously upgrade their skills and learn how to use artificial intelligence in their daily work.
“If only one out of 10 employees remains in a particular role, that person will have to be the most qualified,” labor market specialists say.
Which Careers Are Expected to Grow?
Demand is expected to increase in several fields over the coming years, including:
- artificial intelligence;
- computer science;
- software engineering;
- data analytics;
- cybersecurity;
- supply chain management and logistics;
- agriculture and veterinary medicine;
- teaching;
- social work.
The growing use of artificial intelligence and digital services is expected to increase demand for cybersecurity professionals.
At the same time, the development of trade, transit routes and transport infrastructure is likely to create more opportunities for logistics and supply chain specialists.
Agricultural and veterinary professions are also considered promising, particularly as reconstruction and development projects continue in Azerbaijan’s recently restored territories.
A Popular Degree Does Not Guarantee Employment
Education specialists warn that applicants should consider more than university entrance scores and the popularity of a particular degree.
In some professions, the number of graduates already exceeds labor market demand, making it more difficult for young specialists to find employment.
A successful career increasingly depends not only on having a diploma, but also on practical experience, additional skills and a willingness to continue learning.
According to data from Azerbaijan’s State Examination Center, mathematics teaching, foreign-language education, finance, medicine and design remain among the most popular choices for university applicants.
Experts, however, recommend paying closer attention to fields connected to technology, data and the digital economy.
Universities Are Introducing New Programs
Azerbaijan’s higher education system is also beginning to adapt to changing labor market demands.
New degree programs and specializations in artificial intelligence and information technology have been added to the official list of university qualifications approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Universities are already offering bachelor’s and master’s programs in software engineering and data analytics.
Master’s programs have also been introduced in artificial intelligence and the use of AI in business.
According to the Ministry of Science and Education, more than 5,500 undergraduate places and nearly 1,700 graduate places were planned for information technology programs during the 2025–2026 academic year.
Admissions for a dedicated software engineering degree are also expected to begin in the next academic year.
Who Will Keep Their Jobs in the AI Era?
Experts say the greatest advantage will go not to people who try to compete with artificial intelligence, but to those who learn how to use it as a professional tool.
Creativity, critical thinking, responsibility, empathy and the ability to make ethical decisions are expected to remain distinctly human strengths.
Artificial intelligence may help journalists prepare articles, doctors analyze medical data, teachers create educational materials and engineers speed up calculations.
However, final decisions – and responsibility for their consequences – will continue to rest with people.
The main threat, therefore, may not come from artificial intelligence itself. Those most at risk of losing their jobs are likely to be workers who refuse to develop new skills and adapt to the changing labor market.
