A video showing a ninth-grade student applying makeup on her way to school has sparked debate on Azerbaijani social media over student appearance, parental responsibility and school discipline.
Kamala Aghazade, chair of the Azerbaijan Children’s Union and founder of the Children’s Shelter and Reintegration Center, told Pravda.az that specialists had met with the student and her family.
According to Aghazade, counseling and rehabilitation work has begun with the girl, while her family has acknowledged that publishing the video was a mistake.
The student’s mother reportedly said she had been reluctant to place too much pressure on her daughter because she feared it could cause emotional distress. She admitted that the situation was inappropriate but argued that her daughter was not the only student displaying such behavior.
Aghazade called for stronger monitoring at educational institutions and preventive work involving both students and their parents.
“Parents must understand their responsibility. A school should not turn into a marketplace. Children should devote their time to education rather than makeup and nails,” Aghazade said.
She added that school administrators should respond when students arrive in a manner that violates institutional rules and work with families before such incidents escalate.
The student reportedly explained that she had intended to record an ordinary vlog and had not considered that her video could encourage her peers to imitate her.
The incident has prompted broader discussion about how schools should enforce discipline without subjecting minors to public humiliation. Specialists say such cases should be addressed through dialogue among the student, family, school and relevant professionals.
