After months of preparation and entrance examinations, Azerbaijani applicants are approaching one of the most important stages of the admissions process – choosing their university majors.

Many school graduates now face a difficult decision: pursue their preferred profession or focus on programs that match their examination scores and offer a greater chance of admission.

Karabakh University has attracted particular interest this year. Applicants interviewed by local media said they were considering finance, economics and journalism programs at the university.

Education specialists warn that even a high examination score does not guarantee admission. An applicant may fail to secure a place if the list of programs is prepared without considering competition and previous admission thresholds.

Experts recommend including three types of programs:

  • Majors with previous cutoff scores slightly above the applicant’s result;
  • Programs with thresholds close to the applicant’s score;
  • Several lower-threshold options to reduce the risk of not being admitted.

Applicants are also advised to consider their interests, abilities and long-term career goals instead of relying solely on examination results. Choosing an unwanted profession may eventually lead to disappointment or a decision to change majors.

Azerbaijan’s State Examination Center recommends using only the official information published in the fourth issue of its Abituriyent magazine. It will include universities, program codes, available places and tuition fees for paid programs.

The center also urged applicants to list only majors they would genuinely be willing to study and not entrust the decision to others. Officials specifically warned against relying on unknown social media users presenting themselves as admissions experts.

Ultimately, the choice should reflect not only an applicant’s score but also their interests, skills and plans for the future.
