Azerbaijan’s trade turnover with China rose 4.5% year over year to 4.42 billion manats ($2.6 billion) in January–July 2026, while transit cargo between the two countries increased 8%, Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev said.
Mustafayev announced the figures at an event marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
A total of 272,600 metric tons of cargo moved along transit routes between Azerbaijan and China during the seven-month period, up 8% from the same period in 2025.
Mustafayev described China as one of Azerbaijan’s leading trade and economic partners. He said Azerbaijan remains China’s largest trading partner in the South Caucasus.
Focus on the Middle Corridor
The increase in freight traffic comes as Azerbaijan continues to develop the Middle Corridor, which connects China and Central Asia with Azerbaijan and Europe. Baku has been investing in transport and logistics infrastructure to expand the route’s capacity.
Azerbaijan joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2015. The two countries also abolished mutual visa requirements in 2025, expanding opportunities for business and tourism.
