Piles of medical waste, including items used during surgery and what appeared to be human organ remains, were found in an open area outside the Sabunchu Medical Center in Baku, according to footage aired by local media.
The waste had reportedly remained outdoors for several days, exposed to direct sunlight and producing a strong odor. The dumping site was located only a few yards from a parking area used by patients and hospital visitors.
The report said medical waste should be stored in enclosed, designated containers and removed daily. Journalists also recorded additional bags being taken to the open area during filming.
Witnesses alleged that some waste from the medical center had also been placed in regular municipal trash containers. People experiencing homelessness were reportedly seen searching through the bags, potentially exposing themselves to hazardous materials.
Yalchin Maharramov, a representative of Baku’s municipal services company, said the agency does not collect medical waste from the facility.
“Medical waste must not be mixed with household waste,” Maharramov said. “It must be collected separately and transported in designated vehicles.”
The Sabunchu Medical Center acknowledged that waste removed from the facility had been stored outdoors for a short period before collection.
The center said the material has since been removed and that the responsible contractor has been instructed to comply with proper disposal requirements. Officials added that oversight would be strengthened to prevent a recurrence.
