Some vehicles cannot legally be driven with a Category B license in Azerbaijan, even if they are marketed or commonly regarded as passenger cars.
The determining factors are not the vehicle’s appearance or intended use, but its maximum authorized mass and number of passenger seats, transport expert Arshad Huseynov explained.
A Category B license permits drivers to operate vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of no more than 3.5 metric tons and no more than eight passenger seats, excluding the driver’s seat.
If either limit is exceeded, a Category B license may no longer be sufficient. The restriction can apply to some large SUVs, armored vehicles and specially modified automobiles.
Drivers of vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons may require a Category C1 or Category C license. Those operating such vehicles without the appropriate license could face penalties.
Motorists purchasing large vehicles are advised to check the maximum authorized mass listed in the technical registration documents, rather than relying only on engine size, configuration or appearance.
