One of the people convicted in Azerbaijan for attempting to march with Soviet flags and promoting communist ideas on social media has been identified as journalist Elchin Bayramli.
According to Gununsesi.info, Bayramli worked for the newspaper Ses and had also appeared publicly as a sociologist commenting on social and political issues.
The criminal case involved Abdulla Ibrahimli, Ibrahim Asadli, Elchin Bayramli and Mehman Zeynalov. They were accused of publishing content promoting communist ideology and attempting to hold a march with Soviet flags.
Under a ruling by the Nizami District Court, Ibrahim Asadli and Abdulla Ibrahimli were each sentenced to two years in prison. Bayramli and Zeynalov each received 18-month prison terms.
Gununsesi.info contacted Bayramli’s wife, journalist Lala Mehrali, but she declined to comment.
Bayramli had recently drawn attention through interviews and public statements in which he spoke positively about certain aspects of the Soviet period.
