The president of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Nechirvan Barzani, said the autonomous region will not take part in ongoing regional conflicts and will continue supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

Barzani made the remarks during a phone call with Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, according to a statement released by the KRG presidency.

The conversation focused on regional developments and relations between Iran and the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq. Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and preventing further escalation in the region.

Barzani said the KRG “will not be part of the conflicts” and “will continue to be a factor of peace,” stressing that the regional government supports diplomatic initiatives designed to ease tensions and protect civilians from the risks of war.

The two officials also highlighted the importance of maintaining border security and preventing any actions that could destabilize the region or intensify the current crisis.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the phone call also addressed the broader consequences of recent military attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Barzani expressed condolences over the loss of lives resulting from those attacks and reaffirmed the Kurdistan region’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening friendly relations with Tehran.

Araghchi, for his part, said the military actions had increased insecurity across the region and warned that the consequences could extend beyond the Middle East.

The sides also discussed expanding cooperation between Iran and the Kurdish region within the framework of the Iran-Iraq security cooperation agreement, with the aim of strengthening border security and preventing third parties from exploiting the region to create instability.
