An unexpected money transfer to a bank card from an unknown person may not be a mistake at all, but part of a fraud scheme in Azerbaijan that can pull the cardholder into suspicious financial activity.

According to Vesti Baku, citing Baku.ws, the most important step in such a situation is not to use the money and to immediately inform the bank. Experts warn that in some cases fraudsters gain access to card details without the owner’s knowledge and use those accounts to move funds from various sources before redirecting the money elsewhere.

That means the cardholder can end up becoming an unwitting participant in an illegal transaction chain.

Lawyer Vamiq Shukurov says the main risk arises when a person does nothing in time or decides to spend the transferred funds. Under the law, using money that was credited to an account by mistake or without legal grounds may be treated as unjust enrichment. In that case, the recipient may be required to return the money, and the sender could seek recovery through the courts.

Shukurov says the safest response is to notify the servicing bank immediately. That creates an official record showing the cardholder was not connected to the transfer and may help prevent legal complications later.

He also warns of a more dangerous scenario: if a person, following fraudsters’ instructions, transfers that money to another account, they may later be forced to cover the losses themselves. That could create both financial damage and legal exposure.

For that reason, specialists say any suspicious transfer to a bank card, regardless of the amount, should be reported to the bank immediately, and no transaction should be made until the situation is clarified.
