Older Cars May Drop By Up To 15% In Azerbaijan’s Used Car Market

Azerbaijan’s used car market is showing signs of slower activity, with sellers waiting for buyers and prices coming under pressure in several older vehicle segments.

A recent market review from Baku found fewer cars on display than in previous weeks. Empty spaces were visible across parts of the market, where vehicles are usually parked for sale.

The main problem is not a lack of supply, but weak demand. Sellers are standing next to their cars, but serious buyers appear to be scarce.

According to the review, trading activity has fallen sharply, with the market looking weaker than in previous weeks. The slowdown may partly be linked to holidays and non-working days, but market participants say the broader trend is still clear: buyers are cautious, and sellers may soon face stronger pressure to cut prices.

Market observers expect prices for some used cars to decline during the summer. The forecast does not apply to the entire market, but mainly to older vehicles with traditional internal combustion engines.

Cars produced before 2012 could see the sharpest price drop. This group includes older Hyundai, Kia, Ford and similar gasoline or diesel models. Prices in this segment may fall by up to 15%, according to the forecast.

For newer internal combustion vehicles, mainly models from 2015 to 2018 or 2019, the expected decline is smaller. Prices in that segment could fall by up to 5%, especially for mass-market models such as Kia, Hyundai, Ford Fusion, Toyota and other widely traded vehicles.

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles are expected to hold their positions better. Market observers say prices for these cars are unlikely to rise or fall significantly during the summer and may remain close to current levels.

Several vehicles in different price categories were seen on the market. A 2015 BMW F30 was offered at 23,500 manats (about $13,800), while a 2009 Hyundai Sonata was priced at 18,500 manats (about $10,900). A 2014 Renault Laguna was listed at 14,500 manats (about $8,500), and a 2017 Nissan Sentra was offered at 20,000 manats (about $11,800).

In the higher-price segment, a 2018 BMW X5 was offered for 58,000 manats (about $34,100), a Lexus model for 42,000 manats (about $24,700), and a 2023 Ford Bronco for 44,000 manats (about $25,900).

Still, posted prices do not necessarily reflect real transaction levels. In a weak market, bargaining becomes more important, especially when sellers need to move older cars.

For buyers, the next few months may create more room for negotiation. For sellers, the message is less comfortable: holding yesterday’s price may become harder if demand remains thin.

The pressure is likely to be strongest in older gasoline and diesel cars, where buyers have more alternatives and where newer hybrid and electric models are gradually changing market expectations.
