A New Road Sign In Baku Is Confusing Drivers

A new road sign introduced at several intersections in Baku is causing confusion among drivers, with many unsure how it works and when it applies.

The sign, which effectively allows a driver to turn after yielding to other road users, has been installed at a number of busy junctions in the capital. But judging by reactions on the ground, many motorists still do not clearly understand its meaning.

Some drivers believe the sign only applies when the traffic light is not working. Others think it allows them to continue moving even when the light is red. That confusion has raised concerns that the sign, instead of easing traffic flow, could increase the risk of accidents.

Interviews with drivers suggest there is no common understanding of the rule. Some motorists say they still wait for a green light before turning. Others admit they hesitate because they are worried about traffic cameras and possible fines.

The issue has drawn attention at intersections including the Abdulgab Salamzadeh Street–Tbilisi Avenue junction and the area around Moscow Avenue and Ulvi Bunyadzadeh Street, where the same sign has reportedly been installed.

The broader problem is not the sign itself, but the lack of clarity around how it should be used. On a busy intersection, different interpretations by different drivers can quickly turn into a safety risk.

Traffic specialists say such measures can help improve traffic flow, but only if motorists are clearly informed about the exact rule in force at each specific location. Otherwise, a sign meant to simplify movement may end up creating even more confusion on the road.
