Azerbaijan recorded the closure of 4,200 jobs in the first three months of 2026, according to figures cited in local reporting on the labor market.

About 44.1% of the closed jobs were in the non-state sector. Roughly 12% were linked to enterprises and organizations suspending operations, while around 88% resulted from staff cuts at companies that remained active.

Economists say the figures deserve attention, especially if they coincide with a decline in the number of formal employment contracts. Such a trend can signal pressure inside the labor market rather than a simple reshuffling of jobs.

The reasons may vary. Some employers may be cutting labor costs, while others may be adapting to automation, new technology and the use of artificial intelligence. In many cases, however, job reductions are also linked to weaker business income, slower economic activity or the need to reduce operating costs.

The picture is not entirely negative. Specialists noted that the number of newly opened jobs was higher than in the same period last year, which may soften concerns about the overall condition of the labor market.

Monitoring by the National Observatory on Labor Market and Social Protection Issues shows that demand remains strong in several areas. Employers continue to seek sales representatives, accountants, IT specialists, and workers in agriculture and production-related sectors.

Officials and labor-market specialists say workers will need to adjust to changing demand by updating their skills and preparing for a market in which technology, applied skills and sector-specific experience play a growing role.
