Azerbaijan’s 500-manat banknote, worth about $294, remains an official means of payment, but it is rarely seen in everyday circulation.

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan said the banknote was issued in 2021 as a commemorative note dedicated to Azerbaijan’s victory in the 44-day Patriotic War. Unlike regular denominations used widely in daily transactions, the 500-manat note was produced in a limited quantity.

According to the Central Bank, a total of 1 million 500-manat banknotes were issued.

The regulator said the limited circulation explains why the note is encountered much less often than other Azerbaijani banknotes, even though it has full nominal value and can legally be used for payments across the country.

There may also be a practical reason why many of the notes do not appear in daily use. Large-denomination banknotes are convenient for storing cash because they take up far less physical space than the same amount in smaller notes.

That means some 500-manat banknotes may have settled into private savings rather than active circulation.

Still, the official explanation from the Central Bank is straightforward: the banknote was commemorative and issued in a limited run.

The Central Bank said information on the volume of banknotes in circulation is available through the “National Banknotes” section of its official website.
