Residents of Baku have been noticing an unusual surge in flying ants in recent days, with insects gathering in large numbers near lights, entrances and courtyards across the city.
Videos shared on social media have raised concern among residents, many of whom are asking whether the insects are simply a seasonal nuisance or a possible health risk.
Environmental expert Anvar Aliyev said the sudden increase is linked mainly to sharp changes in weather and temperature. According to him, winged ants can be carried by wind over long distances, allowing them to spread quickly across different parts of the city.
Biologist Gular Huseynzade said the appearance of flying ants in residential areas is a natural seasonal process. In late spring and early summer, winged ants leave their nests for mating, which can lead to their sudden mass appearance.
Experts say the insects do not pose a serious danger to humans. However, they may become a problem if they enter homes and come into contact with food. In such cases, they can contaminate products, and some people may experience allergic reactions.
Residents are advised to keep food covered, maintain cleanliness in homes and yards, and use protective screens on windows and doors. In areas with heavy insect presence, essential oils or special insecticides may also help keep them away.
Specialists stress that this is not an outbreak or a major public health threat, but a seasonal phenomenon. Still, residents are urged to take basic precautions, especially around food.
