A distorted sense of ownership, jealousy and the fear of losing control over a woman can push some men toward extreme violence after divorce, Azerbaijani psychologist Govhar Mammadova said.
Speaking to Demokrat.az, she said domestic violence in Azerbaijan is often linked to the belief that men hold a superior position in relationships and have the right to control women.
According to Mammadova, the danger increases when a man tries to keep a woman financially dependent, grew up witnessing violence at home or had already been abusive during the marriage.
“When a relationship ends, the loss of control, the inability to possess the woman and jealousy can trigger violent feelings toward her,” the psychologist said.
She added that alcohol or drug addiction can make the situation even more dangerous, particularly when violence was already present before the divorce.
Another factor is the fear of losing the sense of security and comfort created by family life.
Mammadova said some men feel stable only while they remain in the relationship. Divorce destroys that familiar environment, and the inability to accept the loss can lead to aggressive and sometimes fatal behavior.
The issue has again come under public attention in Azerbaijan following a deadly incident on Mir Jalal Street in Baku.
A man shot and killed his former wife with a rifle before turning the same weapon on himself.
The case has renewed debate over domestic violence, stalking after divorce and the failure to stop threats before they escalate into murder.
