Car owners in Azerbaijan are being urged to exercise caution when purchasing auto parts, as some components may not be eligible for return or exchange once they have been sold.
According to mechanics and consumer advocates, the issue most often arises with electronic automotive components, which many retailers refuse to accept back after installation or testing.
Why returns are often refused
Auto mechanic Daniz Agabeyli says that many spare parts stores warn customers in advance that electronic components cannot be returned once they have been installed in a vehicle.
Such parts include sensors and other electronic modules that can be affected by incorrect installation or electrical issues in the vehicle itself. Because of this, sellers often argue that they cannot guarantee the condition of the component once it has been used.
As a result, disputes sometimes arise when customers attempt to return a part they believe is defective.
Proving the part is faulty
In some cases, mechanics must demonstrate that the problem originates from the purchased component. This may involve installing a different part and showing that the malfunction disappears.
If the replacement resolves the issue, it can serve as evidence that the original part was defective.
What the law says
Under Azerbaijan’s Law on Consumer Rights Protection, buyers have the right to exchange or return a product within 14 days if it has not been used and retains its original condition.
This rule also applies to auto parts.
However, if the component has already been installed or used, it may be considered a used product, allowing the seller to refuse a return.
What consumers can do
Experts advise consumers to clarify return policies before purchasing car parts and to keep all receipts and documentation.
If a seller refuses to accept a return despite the legal requirements being met, consumers may file a complaint or pursue the matter through the courts.
