Azerbaijan has summoned the ambassadors of Belgium and the Netherlands to the Foreign Ministry after what Baku described as anti-Azerbaijani documents adopted by the two countries’ parliaments.

According to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry, Belgian Ambassador Julien de Frepon and Dutch Ambassador Marian de Jong were called in separately on April 20.

The ministry said Azerbaijan lodged a strong protest over documents adopted on April 16, arguing that they were aimed against the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and were harmful to the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Baku said the documents were based on false and unfounded claims and reflected what it called entrenched anti-Azerbaijani bias within certain political circles in Europe.

The Foreign Ministry also rejected references to Azerbaijan’s sovereign territories, accusations that Armenia’s territorial integrity had been violated, and claims related to the rights of ethnic Armenians and the alleged unlawful detention of Armenian-origin individuals.

Azerbaijan further noted that the adoption of the documents coincided with a recent meeting between the speakers of the Azerbaijani and Armenian parliaments, calling the timing especially paradoxical.

The ministry urged Belgium and the Netherlands to take effective steps to prevent anti-Azerbaijani groups in their parliaments from damaging bilateral relations.
