Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received U.S. Congressman Abraham Hamadeh in Baku on June 17, with the meeting focusing on Azerbaijan-U.S. relations, the future of strategic partnership, Section 907 and regional transport connectivity.

According to Azerbaijani media reports, Aliyev said relations between Azerbaijan and the United States have been developing successfully since Donald Trump returned to power for a second term.

The Azerbaijani leader noted the high level of his personal relations with the U.S. president, recalling his visits to the United States, meetings with Trump and the visit of Vice President J.D. Vance to Azerbaijan.

Aliyev also described the signing of the “Charter on Strategic Partnership between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the United States of America” as a historic step in expanding bilateral ties.

During the conversation, the sides discussed Hamadeh’s role as a co-author of a bill introduced in the U.S. Congress to repeal Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, a long-standing issue in relations between Baku and Washington.

Aliyev said he was confident that Hamadeh’s visit to Azerbaijan would be successful.

Hamadeh, in turn, said he was pleased to be in Azerbaijan and noted the country’s rare geographic position. He also pointed to Azerbaijan’s role as host of major international sporting events, including UFC and Formula 1.

The meeting also touched on the efforts of the Azerbaijani and U.S. presidents to deepen strategic partnership, with both sides emphasizing the importance the two leaders attach to the development of interstate relations.

Trump’s role in advancing the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia was also highlighted. The parties discussed the opportunities that the TRIPP corridor could create for regional transport links.

The sides also exchanged views on strengthening dialogue between Azerbaijan and the U.S. Congress. They noted opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, security, connectivity, technology and other areas, and discussed the broader prospects for Azerbaijan-U.S. partnership.
