Cases of anthrax detected among cattle in Azerbaijan’s Samukh district have raised concerns about the safety of meat sold to consumers.
Buyers say they cannot independently verify the conditions in which animals are slaughtered or whether hygiene requirements are followed. Vendors, meanwhile, insist that the meat they sell undergoes mandatory veterinary inspection.
Some sellers advise consumers to check the meat’s color and avoid products with gray or yellowish discoloration. Experts warn, however, that anthrax contamination cannot be identified by appearance alone.
The disease can be detected only through laboratory testing. Consumers are therefore advised to purchase meat exclusively from authorized retailers that can provide the required veterinary documentation.
Azerbaijan’s Food Safety Agency said livestock must be slaughtered under veterinary supervision to protect public health and ensure food safety. Only animals whose health has been confirmed in advance should be approved for slaughter.
Businesses must not slaughter or sell animals showing signs of illness and should immediately report suspected cases to the relevant authorities.
