Prices for sacrificial animals have risen in Azerbaijan ahead of Eid al-Adha, adding another cost pressure for families preparing for the holiday.

In Baku markets and slaughter points, the cheapest sacrificial ram now starts at around 300 manats, or about $176.

Last year, sellers say, the minimum price was closer to 250-280 manats, or roughly $147-$165. This year, the lower end has moved up to about 300-340 manats, or around $176-$200.

The increase is especially visible for families trying to stay within a fixed holiday budget. Sellers say prices normally rise before Eid al-Adha, but buyers are feeling the difference more sharply this year.

Live-weight prices are currently around 10-11 manats per kilogram, or about $5.90-$6.50. For slaughtered meat, prices can reach 21-22 manats per kilogram, or about $12.35-$12.95.

A standard sacrificial ram can cost around 430-450 manats, or roughly $253-$265. Larger animals are priced higher. Depending on weight, age and appearance, buyers can find rams for 350, 400 or 500 manats.

Prices remain somewhat lower in the regions. Small rams or lambs purchased directly from private farms can still be found for around 250-270 manats, or about $147-$159. In general, sacrificial animals in the districts are being sold mostly in the range of 250-380 manats.

In Goychay, where the livestock market was crowded ahead of the holiday, demand was strongest for rams and goats. Buyers said prices had risen by about 5-10 manats compared with regular days. Market representatives, however, said the increase was more noticeable in some categories: small livestock had gone up by about 20-30 manats, while cattle prices had increased by nearly 100 manats.

Several prices were reported at the Goychay market. One animal weighing about 14 kilograms was offered for 270 manats. A ram weighing around 24-25 kilograms was sold for 410 manats. Sellers also mentioned prices of 390, 430 and 440 manats, depending on weight and negotiations with buyers.

Sellers attribute the increase not only to holiday demand but also to higher costs for feed, care and veterinary medicine. Some said that even with higher market prices, their profit margins remain limited because maintenance costs have also gone up.

At the same time, demand appears more cautious than in previous years. Buyers are calculating expenses more carefully, and for many families even the minimum price of 300 manats has become a serious burden.

Veterinary control has also been tightened ahead of the holiday. Azerbaijan’s Agrarian Services Agency said veterinary specialists are working in an intensified mode during Eid al-Adha, with inspections at live animal markets and slaughter points across the country.

Specialists are conducting clinical checks of animals, monitoring their condition and responding to any signs of disease. Disinfection work is also being carried out at sales and slaughter locations before, during and after the holiday.

The holiday has also created a separate market for decorative accessories for sacrificial animals. Sellers are offering colored ribbons, beads, covers, henna, decorative collars and other festive items. Simple ribbons and bands start at around 2-5 manats, while more elaborate decorations can cost 10-20 manats or more.

But the trend has also sparked debate. Some see the decorations as part of the holiday atmosphere, especially when an animal is taken to relatives or a bride’s family. Others argue that excessive display distracts from the main purpose of Eid al-Adha.

Theologian Tural Irfan has said that a sacrificial animal should be clean and well cared for, but excessive decoration for show is not necessary from a religious perspective. He said the essence of the holiday is intention, charity and sharing meat with those in need.

Ahead of Eid al-Adha, Azerbaijan’s livestock markets show a familiar but sharper picture: prices are higher, buyers are more careful, and the holiday budget has become harder to manage. For many families, the main question is no longer how to decorate the ram, but how to afford one at all.
