Local watermelons have gone on sale in Baku markets, with prices currently ranging from 0.80 to 1 manat per kilogram.

According to sellers, most of the watermelons now available in the capital are grown in Azerbaijan’s Sabirabad district. Around two weeks ago, imported watermelons from Iran were more common on the market, but local produce is now becoming more widely available.

Sellers say Sabirabad watermelons are cheaper because they do not require the same transport costs as imported produce. They also describe local watermelons as better in quality.

“Iranian watermelon is more expensive because of delivery costs, while Sabirabad watermelon is cheaper and better in quality,” one seller said.

For now, prices remain relatively stable. In many markets, watermelons are being sold at around 0.80 manat per kilogram. However, sellers say demand is still weak.

Buyers are divided over the current prices. Some say watermelons remain expensive for the start of the season, while others believe the price is already acceptable.

Food safety specialist Eyyub Huseynov warned that consumers should be careful when buying watermelons to avoid the risk of poisoning. He said buyers should pay attention to the color and texture of the fruit.

According to him, watermelons with an unnatural color inside, thick veins in the flesh or an unusually dense structure may raise concerns.

Experts also advise against buying damaged or pre-cut watermelons, especially if they have been kept outdoors for a long time in hot weather. Such products can quickly become unsafe for consumption.

Sellers expect local watermelons to enter mass sale in the coming days. If supply increases, prices in Baku markets may begin to fall.
