Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has warned that the country is “approaching a tragic end,” blaming what he described as widespread apathy within Georgian society and the political opposition.
Saakashvili made the comments in a Facebook post, according to Vesti Baku, citing Georgia Online.
The former president called for stronger political resistance and argued that Georgians should not rely solely on a possible Ukrainian victory in its war with Russia to change the situation in their own country.
Saakashvili claimed that part of the Georgian opposition had become inactive because its members feared criminal prosecution and arrest. Others, he alleged, had been “bought,” were living abroad or were on vacation.
He also said a significant part of Georgian society was waiting for the war in Ukraine to end, hoping that a victory for Kyiv would automatically transform Georgia’s political landscape.
Saakashvili warned that the policies of the current Georgian government could have serious consequences for the country’s territorial integrity.
He alleged that Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, could be preparing to recognize Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region as independent states.
Under the scenario outlined by Saakashvili, the process could begin with the signing of a nonaggression agreement and later move toward formal recognition. He did not provide evidence that such a plan exists.
“The countdown to Georgia’s existence has begun,” Saakashvili wrote, urging Georgian society to intensify its resistance in an effort to gain time.
The former president also described developments in Ukraine as a positive factor. He claimed that recent polls showed 80% of Ukrainians believed in victory and were prepared to continue the conflict for as long as necessary. Saakashvili did not identify the source of the polling data.
