Political analyst, Doctor of Law and Professor Namik Aliyev said that Armenia is more interested than anyone else in moving forward with the peace process, because a prolonged deadlock would primarily harm Armenia itself.
Speaking on the YouTube channel “Geopolitics With Barvinenko,” Aliyev said Azerbaijan has continued to develop even during the years when its territories were under occupation.
According to him, Azerbaijan has already implemented major energy and transport projects, including regional routes connecting the country with Europe through Georgia and Turkey. He said Baku will continue to pursue its own development agenda regardless of the pace of the Armenian side.
“If Armenia does not want to follow the path of peace, sign a peace agreement, complete border delimitation and demarcation, connect to communications, and open borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey, that is Armenia’s problem,” Aliyev said.
He argued that Armenia would be the side most affected if the process remains suspended.
According to Aliyev, a situation in which the sides are formally moving toward peace but the process does not advance will create problems both for the Armenian government and for opposition forces.
He said the longer the process is delayed, the greater the risk of instability inside Armenia.
Aliyev also commented on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s political course, saying that the Armenian leader is promoting peace, economic development, transport corridors and a more balanced foreign policy.
At the same time, he said Armenia’s opposition is largely building its position on rejecting everything Pashinyan says and does.
Aliyev believes Pashinyan will continue pursuing the peace agenda because he has no other viable path.
“Peace is needed for Armenia today. It is the only direction that can take Armenia out of the deadlock in which it has found itself. That is why I think Pashinyan will go to the end. He has no other way out,” Aliyev said.
According to him, the Armenian government should look for ways to move the peace process forward as soon as possible.
“The sooner it does this, the better, because everything will work against the government itself and against Armenia,” he said.
